The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly of Deltopia 2K14: Havoc in Isla Vista after Deltopia 2014
Spring Break- a damn good reason to get drunk and forget about college exams. Right? It’s all great until someone gets hurt. This year, Deltopia brought about 100 arrests and 44 hospitalizations. The college town of Isla Vista is home to about 23,000 residents, 60% whom are students at UCSB or SBCC. Now, I have been to Deltopia and Halloween weekend in Isla Vista, it’s usually a great time, but it attracts a lot of out of town people who aren’t residents in I.V. and this is where the problems begin. Sheriff’s Spokeswoman, Kelly Hoover said, “Deltopia attracts out-of-towners who come in and are not invested in our community and there are some who come to cause trouble.”
Why we love it :
So our question is, why do people love Deltopia so much? Well here’s your answer. People love Deltopia because it is a glorified drinking weekend where you can go rage on the cliffside away from your hometown. It looks over the ocean, there are giant parties on lawns, girls have a reason to buy tiny bikinis, get spray tans, go shopping for cute shorts and beach wraps, and get drunk on the beach. You can go party with your friends, meet some hot boys, and hook up. Guys love it for the same reason– girls wear tiny bikinis and love taking ridiculous pictures in them, there is a lot of alcohol, there are a lot of girls, and a lot of them are hot (because hey, it’s true ladies, you’re all beautiful and you know it.) All in all, it’s a ridiculous weekend where you get to meet a ton of people you don’t know and just party. For no reason. Except to celebrate a weekend of drinking by the beach. There’s really no good reason to keep it except for us college kids to go have a great time. However, to keep it people have to be respectful and I guess that didn’t work out too well this year, huh. What I don’t get though is why on Earth some of these girls think it’s cool to take these pictures? I get that you’re having fun and all but really? Having 5 guys grab your butt and pose with it? Have a little more tact when you’re taking your spring break photos next time!
Here’s some of the madness we’re talking about:
So here’s the crazy S@#% that went down this weekend:
Deltopia, the popular Santa Barbra party weekend where college kids rage on the beach turned into a rioting crowd of about 15,000 rather quickly this year. The weekend spring breakers from all over look forward to unfortunately caused chaos in Isla Vista at about 9:30 on Saturday where out of hand party-goers began rioting, throwing rocks and bottles, and demolishing property of homeowners. The police were forced to use tear gas and foam projectiles to disperse the crowd.
The beautiful, college community on the beachside drew over 15,000 people who began participating in illicit and unnecessary behavior that not only destroyed property of homeowners in Isla Vista, but injured many. The chaos ensued after an officer arrested a person who swung a backpack of large bottles of alcohol at a police officer and hit them according to Kelly Hoover. Some of the partiers began to hurl rocks, bottles, and bricks at police officers. The streets became littered with trash, street signs were ripped from their posts, rioters smashed windows, destroyed and jumped on cars, and began to encourage violent behavior from others. Fires were lit and people in the crowd began to damage city and law enforcement vehicles. Police officers attempted to disperse the crowd by using pepper spray, tear gas, and foam projectiles.
“It was an emergency situation where we had to call in mutual aid… They have had civil disturbances before in Isla Vista, but it has been many years since something like this,” Kelly Hoover stated. Later it was discovered that one university officer and five deputies sustained injuries. One officer was bashed in the face with a brick and two others were smacked in the hand with bottles. One will require surgery on his hand. 18 were arrested during the rioting and over 100 arrested were made over the course of the day.
In 2010, Floatopia was moved from the ocean to the street due to safety concerns of having college students partying in the ocean. Last year an 18-year-old Cal Poly SLO student fell to her death from a cliff at Deltopia, causing authorities and Isla Vista officials to increase the strength of security at the event.
By Sunday morning, the rioting was over and police received increased support from Ventura County. Crews cleaned the trash-ridden streets.
