Beating Finals By Trashing The Junk

It’s that “final” time of year. The time when fried brains call for french fries and the only math that seems to matter is the incorrect equation which states: college + stress + eating = survival. As a college student, myself, I totally understand these cravings. But in order to avoid that “freshman fifteen,” I have come to discover multiple solutions that rule out the equation and won’t slow you down one bit!

1. Smoothies – Smoothies are the ultimate go-to! They can satisfy nearly every craving that one could possibly have while fitting into one bottle. Perfect for days when you are on-the-run! Not to mention, they are jam-packed with vitamins, nutrients, antioxidants, and protein – that is, if you leave out the ice cream and replace it with either low fat yogurt or almond/soy milk. As a student at Parsons in New York City, I have discovered this wonderful place called “Liquiteria.” There, they offer an array of healthy, nutritious drinks that can be made at home (aka. the dorm!) Below are a few of my favorite blends!
  • Mean Green: Kale, Spinach, Mango, Bananas, Pineapple, and Pineapple Juice
  • Berry Powerful: Blueberries, Strawberries, Raspberries, Bananas, Vanilla Almond Milk, Vanilla Whey Protein, and Flax Seeds
  • Bulldozer: Bananas, Peanut Butter, Vanilla Almond Milk, and Chocolate Whey Protein
  • “Green” Monster: Blueberries, Strawberries, Bananas, Apple Cider, Super Green Food, and Protein Powder
  • Doable Version of their “Skinny”: Strawberries, Bananas, Almond Milk, and Protein Powder
2. Frozen Grapes – This treat takes just ask long to prepare as it does to read, while bursting with more flavor than one could imagine! In fact, I recently read in an online article that one woman has claimed that she finds them to be just as satisfying and addictive as ice cream, while others have said that they are great for replacing a bag of candy!

3. Kale Chips – While walking through the snack aisle or dining hall, do not, and I repeat, DO NOT make eye contact with the potato chips, not even with the veggie sticks. Oh, and don’t even think about using the excuse that they are “vegetables!” Instead, to save yourself from post-shame and that dreadful “sluggish” feeling, go for some good ol’ kale chips! These are chips that guarantee complete satisfaction minus the deceit, as they are never fried, but instead, baked with olive oil. Fact: In 1 cup of kale chips, you’ll consume 134 percent of your daily vitamin C needs to support immune function and more than 600 percent of your daily vitamin K requirements for proper blood clotting. The olive oil used to make the chips also contains 10 percent of the daily value for vitamin E and is a source of antioxidants that protect against cardiovascular disease!
4Dark Chocolate – When consumed in moderation, dark chocolate contains many health benefits such as reduced stress, increased blood flow to the brain that improves performance, reduced insulin resistance which prevents diabetes, a lower blood pressure, and is rich in antioxidants! But remember, the secret here is moderation!
5. Hummus – Here’s the deal: You can never go wrong with hummus. Rich in protein, packed with iron, and known to reduce your risk of cancer, this savory dip is just as healthy as it is insanely delicious. The best thing about it? It comes in an array of “How am I supposed to choose just one?” flavors! Whether spread on a pita or dipped with your favorite vegetables, there is no question that this should be stocked on the top shelf of your mini fridge.

6. Karlie’s Kookies – Three reasons you need to buy a tin of these cookies: One, they are the creation of a collaboration between supermodel Karlie Kloss and Momofuku Milk Bar. Two, a portion of the proceeds for each tin of kookies is donated to help provide nutritious meals to those in need. Three, not only do they satisfy your sweet tooth, but they are dairy-free, wheat-free, and sweetened with agave nectar. Each cookie contains nothing but wholesome ingredients! To buy a tin of either the “Perfect 10” or “5boro,” just go to or stop by their of of their locations, located throughout New York City.
7Goji Berries – Known as one of the “Superfruits,” these berries are a great snack that can be eaten straight out of the bag, mixed in some yogurt, tossed in a salad, or added into trail mix! They are loaded with antioxidants and contain over twenty vitamins and minerals!
8. Edamame – Along with its fun to say name, edamame gives you a bunch of fiber that lowers your risk of heart disease, contains manganese which builds strong bones, and keeps your immune system strong through its high amount of copper!

9. String Cheese – Drop the phone and forget about ordering that grease-filled, extra-cheese pizza. Replace that craving by grabbing a string cheese! Bonus: Let’s be honest, the fact that you can peel it makes it 10 times cooler!
10. Apple with Peanut Butter – A classic. Beginning as a snack that was thrown into your lunchbox for school, it gives you the brain power you need to survive finals, along with your mom’s reminder to “Have a great day and do your best!”
